Pounding Mitigation Design and Real-Time Hybrid Simulation for a Novel Viscous Damper Applied in Bridges

When the actual displacement of viscous damper exceeds stroke limit, excessive pounding force may be generated, resulting in damage to damper. To address this issue, a novel with variable stiffness, simple processing, and good economy is proposed. First, load-displacement relation established through theoretical analysis experimental studies. Second, numerical simulations series parametric analyses are conducted analyze mitigation effect proposed Third, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) for considering presented. Finally, design recommendations given. The results show that effectively reduces amplitudes acceleration by 25% 24%, respectively. Fourier power decreases region from 0.6 Hz 3.3 Hz.
